Which Plan Is Right for You?

Choose Free If:

  • You’re exploring whether this newsletter is valuable
  • You only want weekly industry commentary
  • You’re on a tight budget
  • You’re a student or early-career professional

Choose Standard If:

  • You work in sneakers, footwear, marketing, or content
  • You want insider stories and exclusive analysis
  • You value 3-4 posts per week vs. just one
  • You can expense this as “industry research” ($144/year)

Choose Pro If:

  • You’re a brand executive, marketing director, or consultant
  • You need comprehensive quarterly research reports
  • You expense professional subscriptions ($199/year is less than most trade pubs)
  • You want priority access for consulting/speaking requests
  • You value deep, actionable industry intelligence

Why Pay for This?

1. This Is Actually Useful for Your Job

62% of subscribers are manager-level or above. They expense this as:

  • “Competitive intelligence”
  • “Industry research”
  • “Professional development”
  • “Marketing analysis subscription”

Your company should pay for this. It’s cheaper than trade publications and infinitely more honest.

Standard ($129/year) = $10.75/month when expensed
Pro ($199/year) = $16.58/month for quarterly research reports

2. You’re Supporting Independent Journalism

I’m not beholden to brands, agencies, or advertisers. That means I can tell you:

  • Why Nike’s strategy is actually failing
  • How Under Armour fumbled Curry for a decade
  • Which corporate decisions destroy product innovation
  • What brands don’t want you to know

Your subscription keeps me independent.

3. You Get 20 Years of Insider Access

I was there when:

  • StockX was 9 employees in a room
  • Complex Sneakers launched as its own channel
  • Finish Line established content partnerships
  • Eastbay transitioned from catalog to digital

You get those stories. No one else does.

4. The Quarterly Reports Alone Are Worth It (Pro)

Each Pro quarterly report would cost exponentially more if purchased separately as consulting research. You get four per year, plus everything in Standard.

That’s a lot value for $199.

Recent Pro topics:

  • “The True Cost of Signature Shoe Deals: A 10-Year Analysis”
  • “Why Small Markets Kill Basketball Signature Lines”
  • “Nike’s Layoff Cycle: How Turnover Destroys Brand Value”
  • “The Signature Shoe Graveyard: Where Deals Go to Die”

Who This Is For

✅ You Should Subscribe If:

  • You work in sneakers, footwear, marketing, or content
  • You’re tired of hype-driven coverage that tells you nothing useful
  • You want to understand WHY decisions happen, not just WHAT happened
  • You value insider perspective over press releases
  • You’re willing to pay for quality independent journalism
  • You can expense this as “industry research” or “competitive intelligence”

✅ Pro Is Perfect If:

  • You’re a decision-maker who needs comprehensive research
  • You’re a consultant who bills for industry knowledge
  • You’re a brand executive tracking competitive landscape
  • You’re a marketing director who needs data-backed insights
  • You want quarterly deep dives you can reference all year

❌ This Isn’t For You If:

  • You just want release dates and product drops
  • You’re looking for unboxing videos or styling tips
  • You expect me to praise every brand and never criticize
  • You think “sneaker content” means Instagram flexing
  • You’re not interested in business, economics, or cultural analysis

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I expense this for work?

Yes. Many subscribers do. It’s “industry research,” “competitive intelligence,” or “professional development.” Cheaper than trade publications, infinitely more valuable. Pro members especially use quarterly reports in client work and presentations.

What’s the difference between Standard and Pro?

Standard gets you 3 exclusive posts per week. Pro adds quarterly deep-dive research reports (5,000+ words each, published 4x per year), priority access to me for consulting, Pro-only Q&A sessions, and early book access.

What if I just want the free version?

That’s fine. You’ll get every Tuesday post (2,000+ words of industry analysis). No credit card required. But you’ll miss the insider stories, deep dives, and quarterly reports.

Can I upgrade from Standard to Pro later?

Yes. Just email nick@sneakerhistory.com and I’ll help you switch. You’ll get immediate access to all past quarterly reports.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. No contracts. Cancel whenever. You’ll keep access through the end of your billing period.

Do you offer student discounts?

Email nick@sneakerhistory.com with proof of enrollment and we’ll figure something out.

Is this different from the podcast?

Yes. The podcast is conversations. The newsletter is written analysis and insider stories. Pro quarterly reports don’t exist anywhere else. They complement each other but are separate.

Can I gift a subscription?

Yes! Substack allows gift subscriptions. Great for colleagues, sneakerhead friends, or that person who needs to understand this industry better.

How long are the Pro quarterly reports?

5,000-6,000 words each. Think: comprehensive white paper or consulting report. Published in March, June, September, and December.

Can I share the Pro reports with my team?

Individual Pro subscriptions are for one person. If you want team access, email nick@sneakerhistory.com about group rates (3+ people get 15% off, making Pro $169/year per person).

Will you raise prices?

Probably. As the audience grows and value increases, prices will go up. Current subscribers are locked in at their rate as long as they stay subscribed. (Founding Members from 2025 are locked at $7/month forever.)
