This Question Mid brought together three names that each carry weight, Reebok, A Bathing Ape and mita sneakers, for one of the most celebrated collaborations on Allen Iverson’s signature shoe. Released in December 2016 to mark the Question Mid’s twentieth anniversary, it wraps Iverson’s silhouette in a ballistic nylon upper printed with BAPE’s instantly recognizable 1st Camo, finishes it with tri-branded insoles, and scatters the partners throughout, Reebok on the panels, BAPE’s STA star on the heel, A Bathing Ape on the eyelets, over a white midsole and a translucent green outsole.
The Question is one of the most important guard shoes ever made, the model that announced Iverson, and pairing it with BAPE tied two distinct eras of cool together, late-1990s basketball rebellion and 2000s Japanese streetwear royalty. mita sneakers, the Tokyo retailer, served as the third party that often goes uncredited in shorthand but shaped the project. The 1st Camo is one of the most sought-after Question Mids of its anniversary year, a shoe that turned a basketball classic into a streetwear grail. For an archive it documents the moment Iverson’s Question fully crossed into the collaboration economy, dressed by one of the most influential streetwear labels in the world and a legendary Japanese shop at the same time.
