SB Dunk High "Papa Bear"

2006

Sneaker history

The Nike SB Dunk High ‘Papa Bear’ is one of three shoes released as part of Nike SB’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears pack, a set that became one of the more memorable themed drops in the SB line’s mid-2000s golden era. The Papa Bear colorway pairs navy blue tumbled suede on the base and toe box with shaggy, fur-like gold and tan overlays on the collar, tongue, and portions of the quarter panel, a material choice that made the bear reference literal rather than merely implied. A rust/terra cotta leather Swoosh and matching laces add warmth to the palette, while the chocolate brown heel tab reinforces the earthy, storybook aesthetic. The midsole is white, with a yellow rubber outsole completing the color story. Released through Nike SB’s specialty skate shop network, the pack generated significant demand largely because of its novelty material use and tight distribution. The ‘Papa Bear’ reads as the most imposing of the three, relying on the deep navy and oversized fur textures to separate it visually from the ‘Mama Bear’ and ‘Baby Bear’ iterations. The shoe sits on what appears to be its original box, with the purple lettering consistent with Nike SB packaging from that period. It remains a well-regarded example of the SB program’s willingness to push material experimentation beyond standard leather and suede construction.
