The Old Skool is the Vans that introduced the side stripe, the wavy line the brand calls the Jazz Stripe that became one of the most recognizable marks in footwear. It arrived in 1977 as the first Vans to use leather panels alongside canvas and the first to carry that stripe, and it has been in more or less continuous production since, a genuine staple of skate and street wear. This yellow makeup keeps the formula simple, a bright canvas upper with the white stripe and the signature waffle outsole.
The Old Skool’s importance is in its ubiquity and its durability, both as a product and as a cultural object. It came out of Southern California skate culture and spread to nearly every corner of youth style, worn by skaters, punks, musicians and people who have never stepped on a board, a shoe so common it is easy to forget how foundational it is. The bright yellow colorway is the kind of seasonal pop the silhouette absorbs effortlessly, since the design is strong enough to carry any color. For an archive the Old Skool is a baseline entry, one of the few shoes that genuinely belongs to everyone, and a reminder that some of the most important sneakers are the ones hiding in plain sight.
