The Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard 2.0 is the refined follow-up to the original 2012 Mars Yard, released in 2017 as part of Sachs’s ongoing NikeCraft project. Where the first Mars Yard used a Sport Red Swoosh on a similarly raw upper, the 2.0 refined the construction and materials while keeping the deliberately unfinished, utilitarian aesthetic that defines Sachs’s approach to footwear. The upper combines a natural, unbleached canvas base with tan suede overlays at the toe and heel, giving the shoe the look of something engineered for function rather than fashion. The oversized Sport Red Swoosh sits flat against the canvas panel, almost screen-printed in its appearance, consistent with Sachs’s stripped-back design language. The cream midsole features a deeply serrated lug pattern borrowed from outdoor footwear, and the insole carries a numbered edition print referencing the Mars Yard concept, treating each pair as an artifact of a larger creative system. Red woven pull tabs at the heel add a quiet accent that ties back to the Swoosh. The shoe released through a combination of NikeLab channels and a dedicated Tom Sachs studio draw, making acquisition a controlled, intentional process in keeping with the artist’s broader practice. It remains one of the most consistently referenced Nike collaborations for its conceptual coherence and its ability to translate an art practice directly into a wearable object.
