The adidas Superstar 80s Run-DMC is one of the more culturally loaded releases in the Superstar’s long history. The shoe commemorates Run-DMC’s relationship with adidas, a partnership that crystallized in 1986 when the group performed ‘My adidas’ at Madison Square Garden and held up their Superstars to a sea of fans doing the same. That moment is widely credited as the first major endorsement deal between a hip-hop act and a sportswear brand.
The sneaker itself is built on the Superstar 80s last, which hews closer to the original 1969 basketball silhouette than the standard reissue. The upper is white leather with black three-stripe overlays and the classic shell toe, keeping the palette true to how Run-DMC wore them. The most telling details are in the finishing: ‘1986’ is printed in black on the white heel tab, and the laces terminate in gold lion-head tips, a direct nod to the group’s signature rope chains and medallions. The shoe is worn without laces tied through, honoring the style Run-DMC popularized.
Released as part of adidas Originals’ ongoing effort to document the brand’s deep roots in hip-hop culture, this pair functions as both footwear and artifact. It sits at the intersection of basketball heritage and street culture, a combination the Superstar has navigated since it moved off the court and onto the block in the early 1980s.
