This is a modern tennis shoe wearing a piece of history. The NikeCourt Air Zoom Vapor 11 is a current performance model, but this version borrows its identity from the Nike Mac Attack, the 1984 tennis sneaker built for John McEnroe. Released in 2023, it translates Mac Attack DNA onto the Vapor 11, a Light Smoke Grey and black colorway with the checkerboard tongue label and leather heel tab that defined McEnroe’s shoe, a tribute hiding inside a piece of working tennis equipment.
The Mac Attack itself is one of Nike’s forgotten gems, a shoe McEnroe wore during one of the most combustible careers tennis has ever seen, and it took until 2023 for the brand to properly retro the original. Putting its design language on the Vapor 11 was a way of bridging eras, letting a player using the latest gear carry a reference to the sport’s brash 1980s past. It is the kind of project that rewards knowledge, since most people will see a clean grey tennis shoe and only fans of the era will catch what it is pointing at.
