The Mastermind Japan x adidas NMD XR1 is one of the more recognizable collaboration releases to come out of the NMD line’s early run. Mastermind Japan, the Tokyo-based label built around Masaaki Homma’s skull motif, brought its signature iconography to the XR1 silhouette in a clean black-on-white build that let the branding do the talking. The lateral midfoot carries a printed skull-and-crossbones alongside the Mastermind Japan wordmark, which sits against the black Primeknit upper without competing with it. The TPU cage overlays running along the midfoot are finished in tonal black, keeping the upper reading as a single dark mass above the white Boost midsole. Black EVA plugs at the forefoot and heel round out the midsole, consistent with the standard XR1 construction. The lacing system uses a slightly textured dark lace, and the heel pull tab is trimmed in white for a subtle contrast point at the rear. The white Boost unit grounds the whole package and provides the primary visual break between upper and outsole. This release generated significant demand on drop and moved quickly through both retail and the secondary market, driven by Mastermind’s established following in Japan and its growing profile internationally. The pairing worked partly because the XR1’s cage structure gave the collaboration a more aggressive base than the standard NMD R1, suiting the harder-edged aesthetic Mastermind Japan consistently brought to its partnerships.
