Air Jordan 3 Retro "Grateful"

2018

Sneaker history

The DJ Khaled x Air Jordan 3 ‘Grateful’ is one of the more straightforward collaboration stories in Jordan Brand history. DJ Khaled, a longtime Jordan Brand ambassador and the founder of We The Best Music Group, worked with the brand to produce a PE-turned-general-release built entirely around his signature red. The upper is covered in a fire red nubuck that replaces the traditional tumbled leather construction, while the classic cement elephant print overlays at the heel and toe cap are rendered in grey and white, grounding the shoe in AJ3 heritage. The lace eyelets, lace jewels, and ankle collar all match the red base, creating an unusually monochromatic take on a silhouette known for its two-tone balance. The midsole stays white, and the outsole carries the translucent grey and cement detailing consistent with retro AJ3 production. The shoe came packaged with a clear acrylic hang tag bearing the ‘We The Best’ logotype alongside the Jumpman, nodding directly to Khaled’s label branding. The release was tied to the Super Bowl LII weekend festivities in Minneapolis and carried limited distribution before receiving a wider drop. It occupies a specific moment in the Jordan Brand collaboration timeline when artist and brand partnerships were shifting from quiet PEs toward fully commercialized joint releases with heavy cultural marketing behind them.
