Coney Island Classic "Black"

2017

Sneaker history

Stephon Marbury was AND1’s franchise signature athlete at the brand’s peak, and the Coney Island Classic names the Brooklyn neighborhood that made him. This black colorway is the darker, stealthier half of the 2017 re-release, built on black paneling with a snakeskin-textured upper, white piping and a translucent sole, the AND1 player logo sitting on the side panel. Marbury came out of Coney Island as one of the most hyped guards New York ever produced, and AND1 leaned into that origin rather than inventing a story for him.

The shoe belongs to the turn-of-the-millennium era when AND1 briefly rivaled the major brands, carried by its streetball mixtapes and a roster of players who gave it genuine court credibility. Then the brand collapsed in relevance almost as fast as it rose, which is part of why a clean reissue like this one matters. It is a reminder of a period when the signature shoe market had more than two or three serious players, and when a Brooklyn guard with a chip on his shoulder could anchor a line that kids actually wanted. The black makeup gives the silhouette a more wearable, less overtly retro feel than the original team colors, but the bones are pure late-1990s basketball. For the archive it documents both an athlete and a brand whose importance is easy to underestimate now.
