The Air Yeezy arrived in 2009 as one of the most anticipated sneaker releases Nike had produced in years, built around Kanye West at a moment when his cultural reach extended well beyond music. It was the first signature sneaker Nike produced in collaboration with a non-athlete, which set it apart from every other project in the brand’s history at that point. The retail price of $215 reflected the premium positioning Nike gave it, though demand far outpaced supply at launch.

The design carries a distinct mid-top silhouette with a strap across the ankle and a sculpted sole unit that drew loose comparisons to Nike’s own Air Tech Challenge and elements of the Air Jordan line, while arriving at something that didn’t directly copy either. The upper features a textured, scaled material treatment that became one of the most recognizable details on the shoe. The overall construction felt considered rather than thrown together, and the tooling gave the shoe a presence that was hard to mistake for anything else releasing at the time.

The first colorway released in what became known as a small but significant lineup, each distinguished by its palette and material combinations. This particular colorway established the design language that carried through the rest of the pack, with tonal upper materials and contrast appearing in the midsole and liner details. The partnership between West and Nike was relatively short-lived before he moved to adidas, which added a layer of historical weight to everything produced under the Air Yeezy name and made original pairs considerably harder to find in unworn condition as time passed.
