Air Trainer 1 Mid "Metallic Gold"

Sneaker history

The Nike Air Trainer 1 Mid in Metallic Gold is one of the more visually assertive expressions of a silhouette that has always carried a certain utilitarian confidence. Originally designed by Tinker Hatfield and introduced in the late 1980s as a cross-training shoe for Bo Jackson, the Air Trainer 1 became one of the defining training silhouettes of its era, and the mid-cut variant preserved all the key design details that made the original compelling. This particular build wraps the entire upper in a crinkled metallic gold leather, a material choice that amplifies the shoe’s already bold proportions. The texture of the upper catches light unevenly, giving the gold a lived-in, dimensional quality rather than a flat foil finish. The oversized Swoosh, rendered in the same metallic gold, sits flush against the lateral panel, while the hook-and-loop ankle strap carries a debossed Nike wordmark in black. The collar is lined in black, providing a clean contrast against the gold upper, and the midsole is white with a black rubber heel plug and the Air Trainer’s characteristic multi-directional outsole pattern. The lace system uses a bungee-style cord with a barrel toggle, consistent with retro and special-edition releases of this model. The gold, black, and white palette gives the shoe a trophy-adjacent aesthetic that suits the Air Trainer 1’s athletic heritage without straying into parody.
