The Air Max2 CB 94 arrived in 1994 as Nike’s signature shoe for Charles Barkley, built around the second generation of Nike’s full-length Air cushioning and designed to handle the physical demands of one of the league’s most punishing power forwards. The CB in the name is not subtle branding, it is a direct reference to Barkley himself, who was at that point a reigning MVP and one of the most prominent figures in Nike’s basketball roster.
The OG colorway reflects the aesthetic sensibility of mid-90s Nike basketball: bold, unapologetic, and visually dense. The shoe combined a reinforced leather and synthetic upper with visible Max Air in both the heel and forefoot, a technical specification that was still a selling point in that era. The silhouette is wide and substantial through the base, which suited Barkley’s playing style and physical frame, and the overall construction leaned heavily toward support and durability over anything resembling a low-profile look.
What distinguishes the CB 94 from other Nike basketball models of the same period is how closely the design identity is tied to a single player rather than a generalized performance concept. The Air Max line at the time spanned running and basketball, but this model existed specifically in Barkley’s orbit, which gave it a more focused cultural context. The shoe did well at retail and has maintained a following among collectors with an interest in 90s Nike basketball, partly because of Barkley’s personality and legacy and partly because the silhouette holds up as a representative object of its moment in Nike’s design history.
