The Air Jordan 6 arrived in 1991 as Michael Jordan’s signature shoe for what would become his first championship season with the Chicago Bulls. The silhouette was designed by Tinker Hatfield and introduced several features that set it apart from earlier models in the line, including a rubberized tongue pull tab at the top for easier entry and a clean heel tab that Jordan reportedly requested so he could grip the shoe while dunking. The midsole incorporated a visible Air unit and a herringbone-pattern outsole built for the hardwood.
The OG colorway that accompanied Jordan through that playoff run is anchored in white, with infrared detailing hitting the midsole, the lace loops, and accent panels throughout the upper. Black provides contrast on the outsole and select trim, while the tongue and collar carry the clean white base that made the shoe read as relatively restrained compared to some of its predecessors. Infrared as a color had already appeared on the Air Jordan 5, giving it a thread of continuity through that era of the line.
The shoe holds particular weight in Jordan Brand history because of its direct association with the 1991 Finals, where Jordan and the Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to claim the franchise’s first title. That championship broke the narrative of Jordan as a player who could not win at the highest level, and the 6 was on his feet throughout. Subsequent retro releases have returned to this specific colorway repeatedly, a reflection of how thoroughly the OG colorway became tied to that moment in basketball history. Original pairs from 1991 are among the more sought-after artifacts from that period of the Jordan line.
