Air Jordan 5 Retro "Army Olive"

2006

Sneaker history

The Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Army Olive’ is one of the more distinctive colorways in the AJ5 catalog, built on a foundation of deep olive suede that covers the entire upper. Released in 2006 as part of Jordan Brand’s ongoing Retro program, the shoe leans into a military aesthetic that sits comfortably alongside the silhouette’s original 1990 design language, which drew on fighter jet imagery conceived by Tinker Hatfield. The midsole shark teeth, a signature AJ5 detail, are rendered in burnt orange, adding a sharp contrast against the olive suede and the semi-translucent outsole. The ankle collar is lined in the same orange, and the tongue carries the reflective 3M material that defined the original release. The upper’s suede construction gives the shoe a texture-forward look that ages with visible character, as the photo demonstrates. The olive and orange combination has a utilitarian, almost surplus-store quality that separates it from the more athlete-forward colorways in the 5’s history. The lacing hardware and eyelets are tonal with the upper, keeping the military palette cohesive throughout. This remains one of the more sought-after non-player-edition AJ5 Retros from the mid-2000s run.
