The Air Jordan 39 arrived in 2024 as the latest signature in Nike’s flagship basketball line, and the OG colorway carried the weight of that designation literally. Built around a black and red palette, the colorway draws directly from the original Air Jordan color blocking that Michael Jordan wore during his rookie season in 1984, a combination that became the foundation of the entire Jordan Brand identity and reportedly drew fines from the NBA for violating uniform color rules.
The 39 itself represents a significant step forward in performance construction. The upper uses a lightweight woven material engineered for breathability and lockdown, while the midsole incorporates a full-length Cushlon foam base paired with a forefoot Air unit. The outsole uses a multidirectional traction pattern suited to the quick cuts and lateral movement that define modern guard play.
Releasing in July 2024, the OG colorway was the kind of launch Jordan Brand tends to use as an anchor drop for a new silhouette, grounding the shoe in its historical lineage before branching into player editions and collaborations. The red and black combination carries an automatic recognition factor that newer or more experimental colorways on the 39 do not have, functioning as a visual shorthand for the entire Jordan legacy without requiring any additional context.
Structurally, the shoe sits closer to the performance end of the spectrum than many recent Jordan models, which have tilted heavily toward lifestyle. The 39 was designed with on-court use as the primary intent, and the OG colorway reinforces that positioning by connecting the newest chapter of the line to its most foundational chapter.
