Air Jordan 3 "Cyber Monday"

2016

Sneaker history

The Cyber Monday is the stealth member of the Air Jordan 3 family, a 2016 release that took one of the most storied silhouettes in sneakers and stripped it down to near-total black. Where the 3 is usually defined by its grey elephant print and bright accents, the Cyber Monday goes the other way, an almost entirely black upper sitting on a clean white midsole, with the elephant print rendered in tonal black so it reads as texture rather than contrast. The name came from the retail calendar rather than the design, but the blacked-out execution gave it an identity of its own.

The Air Jordan 3 is one of the most important shoes Nike ever made, the model Tinker Hatfield designed to keep Michael Jordan with the brand, the first to use the elephant print and the first to carry the Jumpman. A murdered-out colorway like the Cyber Monday works precisely because the silhouette is so familiar, letting the shape and the texture carry the shoe without any color doing the talking. It is the kind of versatile, low-key makeup that gets worn hard rather than saved, the opposite of a loud grail. For an archive the Cyber Monday documents how Jordan Brand uses its most iconic models for clean, wearable general releases as well as headline retros, and how even an all-black 3 carries the weight of everything the silhouette started.
