990v3 "Boston Marathon"

2017

Sneaker history

New Balance has a long tradition of releasing limited Boston Marathon editions, and the 2017 990v3 is one of the more visually striking entries in that lineage. Built on the Made in USA 990v3 platform, this release arrives in a deep purple suede and mesh upper that references the colors of the Boston Athletic Association, the organizing body behind the marathon. The orange hits on the outsole and midsole wrap nod to the BAA’s official orange accent color, while the speckled grey ENCAP midsole unit keeps the construction grounded in the utilitarian running DNA the 990 series was built on. The red embroidered ‘990’ at the heel is a subtle but recognizable detail on this iteration, and the BAA’s equestrian unicorn logo appears stamped on the heel tab, marking this firmly as an official marathon collaboration rather than a general colorway. Access to these releases has traditionally been tied to marathon participation or local Boston-area retail, giving the shoe a built-in scarcity that keeps it relevant in the secondary market. The white leather N logo on the lateral and medial panels contrasts cleanly against the purple upper. As a Made in USA product, the construction quality sits at the upper tier of what New Balance produces domestically, with premium suede overlays and solid build integrity throughout.
