Air Jordan 5

Fighter-jet teeth, a reflective tongue, and a clear sole. The Jordan that looked like nothing before it.

The Air Jordan 5 landed in 1990 at a hundred and twenty five dollars, and Hatfield leaned into aviation, pulling the zigzag midsole shark teeth from the nose art of World War II fighter planes. It was the first Jordan with a 3M reflective tongue and a translucent rubber outsole, details that made it instantly recognizable.

Jordan wore it through the 1989-90 season, including a career-high 69-point game against Cleveland. Off the court it became a 90s television fixture, tied forever to the Fresh Prince era. Fire Red, Metallic Silver, Grape, and Black Metallic are the standouts.

The reflective tongue and clear sole have kept the 5 in steady rotation, with Off-White and Supreme collaborations introducing it to new buyers. It is one of the designs people point to when they argue the early Hatfield run was the most creative stretch in sneaker history.
