Nike MAG Auctions Raised $9.4 Million for Parkinson’s

Most of us remember it; it was September 2011 and all anyone was talking about was “How much are these Mags going for?!” Beginning on September 8, 2011 and running for ten days, 1,500 pairs of Nike MAG were auctioned on eBay. It was the largest charity auction in eBay history. Nike says that the auctions gave the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) the signal boost it needed, as Parkinson’s still has no cure four years later. According to Nike, on the first day of the auction the Foundation’s website experienced a greater than 1300-percent increase in traffic over the same day in 2010 and over the course of the 10-day auction the Foundation’s Facebook page added almost 10,000 new fans.

The $4.7 million generated by the auctions alone was then doubled through the $50-million Brin Wojcicki Challenge to bring the total sum donated to $9.7 million. The challenge was announced earlier in 2011 and made possible by Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, and his wife Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of the personal genetics company 23andMe (Nike).

I know you remember the commercials with Bill Hader, Christopher Lloyd, Kevin Durant, and Tinker Hatfield.

Many celebrities bought pairs from the auction; Kanye West copped a pair, Kid Cudi bought four. San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson was seen in the dugout in his MAGs. British hip-hop artist Tinie Tempah spent almost $40,000 to own the first available pair. Most of us have seen Mayor discuss how he acquired his pair of MAGs.

Days after the auctions ended, DJ Skee previewed his newest series on Skee.TV by unboxing his pair of the Nike MAG, which he got from the auction. Check it out.

Jacques Slade did an unboxing of the Universal Studios movie version of the Nike MAG.

All the numbers and data on the Nike MAG Auctions are below. The average price the MAGs went for is half what Flight Club wants for a pair (as if their prices reflect the market). October 21 is coming very soon–how much have you set aside in your savings?
