For the sneaker enthusiast, there aren’t many shoes that are more significant than the Nike MAG. Originally seen on the feet of Michael J. Fox in the movie Back To The Future II, the self-lacing shoes have captured the attention of multiple generations. First, with the original release of the movie in 1989, and again in 2011 with a series of Nike MAG charity auctions that raised over $11 million dollars for Parkinson’s.
Because the scene of the movie that first introduced the Nike MAG to the world was set in 2015, there has been endless speculation that we would see the self-lacing version released this year. It was confirmed by legendary Nike Designer, Tinker Hatfield, earlier this year that there would be a release. Then last week, Nick DePaula dropped the October 21 date, which stirred the pot some more.
Whether you’re old enough to have spent hours upon hours examining VHS versions of BTTF II back in the early 90s, or your memories of the MAG are built from YouTube and Netflix binges, Nike and their self-lacing shoes have everyone on the edge of their seat again. Grab some popcorn and get ready, because with an original pair worn by Michael J, Fox now available at auction, there is sure to be some sneaker history in the making over the next few months.
